Large, wild male Koala hanging in eucalyptus tree, Magnetic Island

Koalas are portrayed as cute and cuddly animals, however wild koalas should not be handled or approached. They have large sharp claws for climbing trees and can attack if handled. Koalas have been associated in popular culture to the modern myth or hoax of the Drop Bear. The Drop Bear is described as a large, predatory marsupial related to the Koala that attacks by dropping on people as they walk below. Magnetic Island is 5 km offshore from Townsville in North Queensland. It has a large and healthy wild Koala population. Photograph was taken on the Forts walk which is a good area for spotting wild Koalas. Koalas are an herbivorous marsupial and spend most of their life in eucalyptus trees sleeping and eating. They are often found slouched in tree branches

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a large, wild male Koala hanging gracefully in an eucalyptus tree on Magnetic Island. Known for their portrayal as cute and cuddly creatures, it is important to remember that wild koalas should never be approached or handled. With their sharp claws designed for climbing trees, they can become defensive if provoked. Interestingly, koalas have been associated with the modern myth or hoax of the Drop Bear in popular culture. This mythical creature is described as a predatory marsupial closely related to koalas that attacks unsuspecting victims by dropping from trees above them. While this may be nothing more than folklore, it adds an intriguing layer to our perception of these fascinating animals. Located just 5 km offshore from Townsville in North Queensland, Magnetic Island boasts a thriving population of healthy wild koalas. The photograph was taken along the Forts walk, renowned for providing excellent opportunities to spot these herbivorous marsupials in their natural habitat. Often found slouched comfortably on tree branches, koalas spend most of their lives sleeping and eating eucalyptus leaves. Their peaceful existence amidst the lush greenery showcases nature's beauty at its finest. This remarkable image captured by Andrew Merry serves as a reminder of both the allure and untamed nature of Australia's beloved koala population.
