Australian occupation of Nauru, South Pacific, WW1

The Australian occupation of Nauru (also known as Pleasant Island), a small island in the South Pacific, during the First World War. The island was previously part of German New Guinea, until Australian naval forces removed its German officials on 4 August 1914. Australian occupation began on 7 September 1914, and the island became part of British Western Pacific Territories, administered by Australia. It was briefly occupied by Japan during the Second World War, but then returned to British control. The island eventually became independent in 1968, as the Republic of Nauru. In this photo, troops, European residents and natives gather to witness the hoisting of the Union Jack. Date: 7 November 1914

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of Nauru, a small island in the South Pacific, during the First World War. Previously part of German New Guinea, the island was seized by Australian naval forces on 4 August 1914, and occupation officially began on 7 September 1914. The Union Jack was hoisted on 7 November 1914, marking the island's incorporation into the British Western Pacific Territories, administered by Australia. The image shows a diverse crowd of troops, European residents, and native Nauruans gathered around the flagpole, a palm tree adorned with the Union Jack. The tree, with its lush foliage and the stark contrast of the flag against its green backdrop, symbolizes the fusion of the British colonial influence with the tropical island environment. The island was briefly occupied by Japan during the Second World War but was later returned to British control. Nauru eventually gained its independence in 1968, becoming the Republic of Nauru. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the global events that shaped the island's history.
