Aral Sea Collection

The Aral Sea was once the fourth largest lake in the world, located between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in Central Asia. It was fed by two major rivers, the Amu Darya and Syr Darya. Unfortunately, due to Soviet irrigation projects in the 1960s and 1970s, these rivers were diverted for agricultural use. As a result, water levels dropped drastically and salinity increased significantly. By 2009, it had split into two smaller bodies of water - the North Aral Sea and South Aral Sea - with only 10% of its original volume remaining. The environmental damage caused by this loss is immense; decreased rainfall has led to desertification of surrounding areas while air pollution from dust storms created by exposed lakebeds has caused numerous health problems for local populations. Despite some recent efforts to restore water levels through dam construction, it is unlikely that the Aral Sea will ever return to its former glory.
