The Caspian Sea is the largest inland body of water in the world, located between Europe and Asia, and is bordered by Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkmenistan, Iran and Azerbaijan. The Caspian Sea has an area of 371,000 square kilometers (143,200 square miles) and a maximum depth of 1,025 meters (3,363 feet). Its waters are rich in oil reserves and other natural resources. The sea is home to many species of fish including sturgeon which are harvested for their caviar. They also provides a habitat for numerous birds such as flamingos and pelicans and has been used as a transportation route since ancient times with ships traveling from the Black Sea to Central Asia via the Volga-Caspian Canal. In recent years it has become increasingly polluted due to industrial waste runoff from nearby countries making it an environmental concern for many nations in the region.
