Aral Sea Collection

The Aral Sea was once a large inland lake located between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in Central Asia. It was the fourth largest lake in the world, with an area of 68,000 square kilometers. However, due to Soviet-era irrigation projects that diverted water from its two main tributaries - the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers - it has been shrinking since 1960. By 2009, it had shrunk to 10% of its original size and split into four smaller lakes. The salinity of the water has also increased significantly due to evaporation caused by higher temperatures in the region. This has had a devastating effect on local fishing communities who relied on it for their livelihoods as well as on biodiversity in the region. Efforts are now being made to restore some of its former glory by introducing measures such as damming rivers that feed into it and creating artificial wetlands around its edges.
