Horace Wells Collection

Horace Wells (1815-1848) was an American dentist and pioneer of the use of anesthesia in dentistry. He is credited with being the first to use nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, as a general anesthetic in 1844. After witnessing a demonstration of nitrous oxide at a public lecture, he became convinced that it could be used to painlessly extract teeth. He tested the gas on himself and then on patients, but his efforts were met with skepticism from other dentists. Despite this setback, Wells continued to promote the use of anesthesia in dentistry until his death from suicide at age 33. His legacy lives on today as one of the most important figures in dental history and as an example of how dedication can lead to medical breakthroughs even when faced with adversity.
