Henry Wallis Collection

Henry Wallis (1830-1916) was a British painter, best known for his painting The Death of Chatterton. He was born in London and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. Wallis's early works were mainly portraits and genre paintings. His later works were more ambitious, such as his painting The Death of Chatterton which depicted the death of the poet Thomas Chatterton in 1770. This painting made him famous and established him as a pre-Raphaelite artist. His other notable works include The Stonebreaker (1857), A Roman Girl's Funeral (1860) and Christ Washing Peter's Feet (1860). He also painted landscapes, such as his series of views on the River Thames from Richmond to Hampton Court Palace. Wallis's work is characterized by its realism, attention to detail and vibrant colors which make it stand out among other 19th century artworks.
