Charles White Collection

Charles White (1918-1979) was an African-American artist and educator who is best known for his large, powerful drawings of African Americans. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and later taught at both the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles and the University of Southern California. His work often depicted strong, heroic figures from African American history, such as Harriet Tubman, Nat Turner, and Sojourner Truth. He also created a series of lithographs called "The Contribution of the Negro to American Culture" which highlighted prominent figures in black history.
