Cottage Toilet

circa 1830: An engraving of a genre scene, 'The Cottage Toilet', painted by Scottish artist David Wilkie. Wilkie, born in Fife, was sent to the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh before moving to London to study at the Royal Academy. He is famous for genre paintings which often depict historical events, such as John Knox preaching, but also painted portraits and his picture of Walter Scott with his family can still be seen in the Scottish National Gallery. He was appointed King's Limner for Scotland in 1823 and painter in ordinary to William IV in 1830. He died in 1841 while returning from a voyage to the middle east. Turner's painting of Wilkie's burial at sea hangs in the Tate Gallery in London.
