Alfred Rudolph Waud Collection

Alfred Rudolph Waud (1828-1891) was an American artist and illustrator. He is best known for his sketches of the American Civil War, which were published in Harper's Weekly. He also worked as a staff artist for the New York Illustrated News and the New York Herald. Waud was born in London, England and immigrated to America with his family at a young age. He began his artistic career in 1851 when he joined Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper as an illustrator. His work during the Civil War depicted battles, encampments, and everyday life of soldiers on both sides of the conflict. After the war ended he continued to illustrate scenes from American history until his death in 1891. His work has been widely praised for its accuracy and detail, making him one of America's most important historical artists.
