Simon Vouet Collection

Simon Vouet (1590-1649) was a French Baroque painter, draftsman, and printmaker. He is best known for his religious paintings and portraits of the French court. Vouet was born in Paris and trained with the Mannerist painter Georges Lallemand before traveling to Rome in 1613. There he studied under the Carracci family and developed a style that combined elements of both Italian Mannerism and contemporary Roman painting. His work was highly sought after by patrons throughout Europe, including Pope Urban VIII, who commissioned him to decorate several churches in Rome. He returned to France in 1627 where he became one of the leading painters at the court of Louis XIII, painting portraits of members of the royal family as well as religious works for churches around Paris. His influence on French art can be seen in many later artists such as Charles Le Brun and Nicolas Poussin.
