Luigi Vanvitelli (1690-1773) was an Italian architect and engineer who is best known for his work in the Kingdom of Naples. He was born in Milan, and studied architecture under Carlo Fontana. His most famous works include the Royal Palace of Caserta, the Aqueduct of Vanvitelli, and the Basilica di San Leucio. He also designed many churches, palaces, villas and public buildings throughout Italy. His style combined classical elements with Baroque details to create a unique aesthetic that is still admired today. He was also a pioneer in hydraulic engineering; his aqueducts were some of the first to use gravity as their source of power.
