Taylor traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia during his lifetime. In 1872 he became the first American to cross Siberia on foot from east to west. He wrote several books about his travels including Views Afoot; or Europe Seen with Knapsack and Staff (1846) which described his journey through Germany, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Syria and Palestine.
