Edward Savage Collection

Edward Savage (1761-1817) was an American portrait painter and engraver. He was born in Princeton, Massachusetts and trained as a painter in Boston. Savage moved to London in 1784 where he worked as an engraver for the Royal Academy of Arts. He returned to America in 1789 and established a studio in Philadelphia, where he painted portraits of prominent Americans such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton. His works were widely admired for their lifelike quality and attention to detail. In addition to his portraiture work, Savage also produced prints of famous historical events such as the Battle of Bunker Hill.
