John Sloan (1871-1951) was an American painter and etcher who was a member of the Ashcan School of American realism. He was born in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His works often depicted everyday life in New York City, with a focus on urban scenes such as street corners, tenement buildings, and subway stations. He also painted landscapes from his travels to places like Gloucester, Massachusetts and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Sloan's works were exhibited widely during his lifetime; he also wrote several books about art theory and criticism. His style is characterized by bold colors, energetic brushstrokes, and an emphasis on light effects. In addition to painting and etching, Sloan taught at the Art Students League in New York City for many years before his death in 1951.
