William Thomas Smedley Collection

William Thomas Smedley (1858-1937) was an English artist and illustrator. He is best known for his illustrations of books and magazines, including the works of Charles Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray, and Robert Louis Stevenson. He also worked in the decorative arts, creating designs for furniture, wallpaper, stained glass windows and other items. His work was often inspired by nature and he had a particular fondness for birds. He was a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers & Engravers as well as the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours.
