Edwin Rosskam Collection

Edwin Rosskam is an American photographer and filmmaker. He was born in Philadelphia in 1910 and began his career as a photojournalist for the Philadelphia Record, where he documented the city's everyday life. In 1940, he moved to New York City and began working with Roy Stryker at the Farm Security Administration, documenting rural America during the Great Depression. After World War II, Rosskam worked as a freelance photographer for Life magazine and other publications before joining Magnum Photos in 1954. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in many public collections including The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Gallery of Art, and The Smithsonian Institution. Rosskam's photographs are known for their vivid colors and strong compositions that capture both the beauty of everyday life as well as its struggles.
