Washington Roebling Collection

Washington Roebling was an American civil engineer and bridge builder who is best known for his work on the Brooklyn Bridge. He began his career in 1841 as a surveyor, working on the Delaware and Hudson Canal. In 1867, he was appointed chief engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge project, which he worked on until its completion in 1883. Despite suffering from decompression sickness during construction, Roebling oversaw every aspect of the project from design to completion. His innovative use of steel cables and suspension techniques revolutionized bridge engineering and made possible many of today's iconic bridges around the world. He also designed several other bridges throughout New York City including Williamsburg Bridge and Queensboro Bridge.
