Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) was an American artist, naturalist, and soldier. He is best known for his portraits of prominent figures of the American Revolution such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. He was also a prolific painter of still lifes and landscapes. Peale was a self-taught artist who began painting in 1767, eventually establishing himself as one of the most successful portrait painters in America.
