Friedrich Overbeck Collection

Friedrich Overbeck (1789-1869) was a German painter and member of the Nazarene movement, a group of 19th century Romantic painters who sought to revive the spiritual values of Italian Renaissance art. He was born in Lübeck and studied at the Vienna Academy. His early works were religious paintings, but he later turned to landscapes and portraits. He traveled extensively throughout Italy, where he was inspired by classical art as well as contemporary Italian painting. Overbeck's work is characterized by its intense colors and dramatic compositions, often featuring figures in dramatic poses set against a backdrop of ruins or other romantic settings.
