Vladimir Egorovic Makovsky Collection

Vladimir Egorovic Makovsky was a Russian painter, art collector, and art historian. He was born in Moscow in 1846 and studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. He is best known for his genre paintings of everyday life in Russia during the 19th century. His works often featured scenes from Russian history, such as the Siege of Sevastopol (1854-1855) and The Last Day of Pompeii (1870). He also painted portraits of famous people such as Tsar Alexander II (1881). Makovsky's work has been exhibited widely throughout Europe and North America. In addition to painting, he wrote several books on the history of Russian art that are still used today by scholars. Makovsky died in 1920 at the age of 74 after a long career as one of Russia's most important painters.
