Nicolas Andre Monsiau Collection

Nicolas Andre Monsiau (1754-1837) was a French painter and art theorist, who is best known for his neoclassical style. He studied under the painter Joseph-Marie Vien and was influenced by the works of Jacques-Louis David. Monsiau's paintings were mostly historical scenes, often depicting battles or other events from ancient history. He also painted portraits of prominent figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte and Marie Antoinette. In addition to painting, Monsiau wrote several treatises on art theory and aesthetics. His writings focused on topics such as color theory, composition, perspective, and the importance of drawing from life rather than relying solely on imagination or memory. Monsiau's work had a major influence on French neoclassicism in the late 18th century and early 19th century.
