Peter Lely Collection

Peter Lely (1618-1680) was a Dutch painter of the Baroque era. He is best known for his portraits of the courtiers and nobility of Charles II's Restoration court in England, which earned him the nickname "Painter to the King". His style was heavily influenced by Anthony van Dyck, and he was an important figure in introducing a more relaxed style of portraiture to England. He also painted many mythological scenes, landscapes and still lifes. Lely's work is characterized by its use of bright colors, strong composition and meticulous attention to detail. His influence on English art can be seen in the works of later painters such as Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds.
