Photoelastic stress of forks and spoons Featured polarized light Print

Photoelastic stress of forks and spoons

Coloured light interference pattern of spoons and forks. When photographed through cross-polarised white light some transparent plastics display coloured interference effects, according to the pattern of residual stress within the plastic (a result of moulding manufacturing). Areas of similar colour represent regions under similar degrees of stress. This phenomenon, known as photoelasticity, is utilised in engineering situations. Plastic models of bridges, gears, axles, etc may be made and subjected to proportional loads in order to predict the stress patterns that might occur in the real objects

Melatonin, light micrograph Featured polarized light Print

Melatonin, light micrograph

Melatonin. Light micrograph in polarised light of crystals of the hormone melatonin. Melatonin is secreted by the pineal gland in the brain that controls the body's biological rhythm. It is secreted at night and induces sleep. Pills containing melatonin can be taken to prevent jetlag. In middle age, melatonin secretion drops off and may be responsible for aging symptoms such as insomnia and irritability. Vertical object-size 1.2mm

Adrenaline, polarized light micrograph Featured polarized light Print

Adrenaline, polarized light micrograph

Adrenaline. Polarized light micrograph of crystals of adrenaline (epinephrine). This is a hormone produced in the adrenal glands above the kidneys. Adrenaline is normally present in blood in small quantities. However, in times of stress large quantities are secreted into the blood- stream. Adrenaline widens the airways of the lungs, constricts small blood vessels and liberates sugar stored in the liver. This makes the muscles work harder and produce a "fight or flight" response. Adrenaline used as a drug expands the bronchioles in acute asthma attacks, or to stimulate the heart in cases of anaphylactic shock. Magnification: 50x
