David Livingstone Collection

David Livingstone was a Scottish explorer, missionary, and doctor who is best known for his explorations of Africa. He was born in 1813 in Blantyre, Scotland and educated at the University of Glasgow. In 1841 he set out on his first expedition to explore the continent of Africa. During this journey he discovered Lake Ngami and the Zambezi River. He also became the first European to cross Africa from coast to coast. Livingstone's travels were widely publicized by newspapers in Europe and America, making him a popular figure in both continents. His later expeditions focused on finding sources of the Nile River as well as exploring central Africa with an eye towards ending slavery there. He died while on one such expedition in 1873 but his legacy lives on through his writings about African culture and geography which inspired generations of explorers after him.
