Louis Le Vau (1612-1670) was a French Baroque architect and designer who is best known for his work on the Palace of Versailles. He was born in Paris and trained as an architect under François Mansart. Le Vau's style combined elements of classicism, baroque, and Italian Renaissance architecture. He designed several notable buildings including the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, the Church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris, and the Hôtel Lambert in Paris. He also collaborated with Charles Le Brun on many projects including the Palace of Versailles which he redesigned to include a grand central staircase, an expansive garden façade, and two wings that extended from either side of the main building.
