Cornet Thomas Boothby Parkyns
Cornet Thomas Boothby Parkyns, 15th (or the King?s) Regiment of (Light) Dragoons, 1780. Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left ?J Boultbee, Pinx 1780?, by John Boultbee (1753-1812), 1780. Parkyns served in the 15th Light Dragoons from 1776 to 1781. He wears the distinctive metal light dragoons headdress with the comb and Gorgon?s head, together with the battle honour, ?Emsdorf? (1760), particular to the 15th (see also ). The artist's sister, Jane Boultbee, was his stepmother. Shortly after his marriage to the ?sole heir of Sir William James?, Parkyns became MP for Stockbridge, Hampshire, then for Leicester in 1790. That he ?married money? is also suggested by the fact that in March 1794 he rejoined the Army as a Lieutenant and, by November, had risen through the ranks to be Colonel of the Prince of Wales's (Leicester) Fencible Infantry, a regiment raised for home defence. The following year he was created Baron Rancliffe of the Peerage of Ireland. Date: 1780

Surface buildings, possibly one of the Basset Mines, Illogan, Cornwall. Around 1906
Reginald Colwell James (1890-1974) of St Columb Major, with mine buildings in the background (thought to perhaps be one of the Basset Mines). Reginald was a student of Henderson's Mining School, Truro, and later became an associate member of the Institute of Mining Engineers. In 1919 and 1925 he is recorded as living at Hillside, Tregurrian, St Columb Minor. By 1936 he had moved to Kearsley Road, Reading, Berkshire. Reginald has written on the back of the photograph: This is a snapshot - I was pulling up my collar at the time. Reading from right to left - Graves, Webb, myself. Webb has adorned his hat with an old hoop from a pail. The little house marked with a cross is an "undressing place"; to the right of it and projecting is the survey office or Capt. Jenkin's Office. The big building is the smithy and in the extreme background is a nearer view of the pumping engine and tackle. Notice the miner's candles which Graves carries'. It is possible that Reginald is referencing Captain Thomas Jenkin, who held the position of Chief Underground Surveyor at Henderson's School of Mines. Captain Jenkin died in South Frances Mine, together with Captain William James Junior and Cecil Thomas, on 10th September 1906, following a fall of earth from the roof. Photographer: Unknown

Bristol Riots: Ruins of Warehouses in Prince Street, c.1831 (oil on paper)
2831200 Bristol Riots: Ruins of Warehouses in Prince Street, c.1831 (oil on paper) by Muller, William James (1812-45); 11.2x17.4 cm; Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, UK; (add.info.: The Bristol Riots of 1831 took place after the House of Lords rejected the second Reform Bill, which aimed to get rid of some of the rotten boroughs. Local magistrate Sir Charles Wetherell, a strong opponent of the Bill, visited Bristol to open the new Assize Courts, on 29 October, and an angry mob chased him to the Mansion House in Queen Square. The rioters numbered about 500 or 600 young men and continued for three days, during which the palace of Robert Gray the Bishop of Bristol, the Mansion House, and private homes and property were looted and destroyed, along with demolition of much of the gaol. Four rioters killed; and four men hanged despite a petition of 10,000.); Purchased, 1921.; English, out of copyright
