Wilhelm Hensel Collection

Wilhelm Hensel (1794-1861) was a German painter, musician and poet. He was born in Berlin and studied painting under his father, the court painter of Prussia. He also studied music with Carl Friedrich Zelter and composition with Ludwig Berger. His paintings were mainly landscapes, but he also painted portraits and religious works. He was a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts from 1826 to 1831. In addition to his artistic career, Hensel wrote poetry and composed music for piano, organ and choir. His most famous work is the oratorio "The Creation" which he wrote in 1841 based on Joseph Haydn's original work. Hensel's works have been exhibited in many galleries around Germany including the National Gallery in Berlin as well as other European countries such as France and Italy.
