Albert Herter Collection

Albert Herter (1871-1950) was an American painter, muralist, and designer. He was born in New York City to a wealthy family and attended the Art Students League of New York. His works were heavily influenced by his travels throughout Europe, particularly Italy and France. He is best known for his murals which can be found in many public buildings such as the Library of Congress and the US Capitol Building. Herter also designed furniture, stained glass windows, rugs, tapestries, lamps, jewelry boxes and other decorative objects. His style was a combination of realism with elements of symbolism and fantasy which often featured allegorical figures from Greek mythology or religious themes. Herter's work has been exhibited in numerous galleries around the world including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City where he had a solo exhibition in 1931.
