John Hoppner (1758-1810) was an English portrait painter and one of the most successful artists of his time. He was born in London, the son of a German father and English mother. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1775 to 1778, where he won several prizes for his work. His portraits were highly sought after by royalty and nobility alike, including King George III and Queen Charlotte. He also painted many other famous people such as Lord Nelson, William Pitt, Sir Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Lawrence.
