Franz Hanfstaengl Collection

Franz Hanfstaengl (1804-1877) was a German painter and lithographer who was born in Munich. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, and then moved to Paris where he worked with some of the leading artists of his time. He specialized in portraiture, as well as landscape painting and lithography. His works were highly sought after by royalty and aristocrats, including King Ludwig I of Bavaria who commissioned him to paint portraits for his court. Hanfstaengl also had a successful career as an art dealer, selling works by many prominent European painters such as Rembrandt, Rubens and Gainsborough. He eventually returned to Germany where he continued to paint until his death in 1877. His legacy lives on through the many beautiful pieces that he left behind for future generations to enjoy.
