Cypresses 1889 Vincent van Gogh

Cypresses was painted in late June 1889, shortly after Van Gogh began his yearlong stay at the asylum in Saint-R?my. The subject, which he found "beautiful as regards lines and proportions, like an Egyptian obelisk," both captivated and challenged the artist: "It's the dark patch in a sun-drenched landscape, but it's one of the most interesting dark notes, the most difficult to hit off exactly that I can imagine." One of two close-up views of the "very tall and massive" trees in a vertical format (the other is in the Kr?ller-M?ller Museum, Otterlo), Cypresses was shown in the 1890 Salon des Ind?pendants

Arles, Town Hall in Place de la Republique

Arles is a city and commune in the south of France, in the Bouches-du-RhA?ne department, of which it is a subprefecture, in the former province of Provence. A large part of the Camargue is located on the territory of the commune, making it the largest commune in Metropolitan France in terms of territory. The city has a long history, and was of considerable importance in the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis. The Roman and Romanesque Monuments of Arles were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1981. The Dutch post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh lived in Arles in 1888-1889 and produced over 300 paintings and drawings during his time there. An international photography festival is held in the city since 1970
