Alexander Gardner Collection

Alexander Gardner was an American photographer who is best known for his work documenting the American Civil War. He was born in Paisley, Scotland and immigrated to the United States in 1856. In 1861 he opened a photography studio in Washington D.C., where he quickly gained recognition for his work. During the Civil War, Gardner served as a photographer for Mathew Brady's studio and documented many of the war's most important battles, including Antietam and Gettysburg. After the war, Gardner continued to photograph prominent figures such as President Ulysses S Grant and Chief Sitting Bull of the Lakota Sioux tribe. His photographs are now considered some of the most important historical records of 19th century America and have been featured in numerous exhibitions around the world.
