Erastus Salisbury Field (1805-1900) was an American painter and engraver who specialized in genre scenes, portraits, and landscapes. He was born in Leverett, Massachusetts, and studied art at the National Academy of Design in New York City. Field's works were popular during his lifetime; he exhibited at the National Academy of Design from 1826 to 1876. His paintings often depicted everyday life in rural New England towns such as Leverett. He also painted several portraits of prominent figures such as President John Quincy Adams and Senator Daniel Webster. Field's work is still highly regarded today for its attention to detail and use of light to create a sense of atmosphere.
