1829: A mounted bodyguard from the entourage of the Sheikh of Bornou. The Kanem-Bornu Empire was founded in the 9th century by peoples living near Lake Chad, to facilitate trade across the Sahara Desert. An engraving by Edward Finden from a sketch by British explorer Dixon Denham. Denham and Hugh Clapperton had journeyed through Africa in the 1820s in search of the source of the River Niger.
