David Klocker Ehrenstrahl Collection

David Klocker Ehrenstrahl was a Swedish painter and printmaker who is best known for his portraits of the Swedish royal family. He was born in Stockholm in 1629 and studied at the Royal Academy of Arts from 1650 to 1654. He then traveled to Italy, where he studied with the great Italian masters, including Pietro da Cortona and Carlo Maratta. After returning to Sweden, he became court painter to King Charles XI in 1675. His works include portraits of members of the royal family as well as landscapes and allegorical paintings. He also produced a number of etchings which were widely admired during his lifetime. Ehrenstrahl's work is characterized by its realism and attention to detail, making him one of Sweden's most important painters during the 17th century.
