Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) was a German Renaissance painter, printmaker and designer. He was born in Kronach, Germany and apprenticed under his father who was also an artist. He later moved to Vienna where he established a workshop with his brother Hans. His works were highly sought after by the court of Saxony and he became court painter to Elector Frederick the Wise in 1505. His style is characterized by its use of bright colors, strong lines, and intricate details. He painted religious works as well as portraits of members of the court including Martin Luther and his wife Katharina von Bora.
