Captain Seth Eastman Collection

Captain Seth Eastman was an American soldier, artist, author, and engineer. He served in the United States Army for over 40 years and fought in the Black Hawk War and the Mexican-American War. He was a prolific artist who created hundreds of works depicting Native Americans and their culture. His most famous work is a series of paintings commissioned by Congress to illustrate Henry Rowe Schoolcraft's six-volume study on Indian Tribes of the United States. Eastman also wrote several books about Native American life, including his autobiography “Sketches of Indian Life” (1848). In addition to his art and writing, Eastman was an accomplished engineer who designed several military posts throughout the Midwest. He died in 1875 at age 73 after a long career as one of America's most important artists and engineers.
