Thomas Daniell Collection

Thomas Daniell (1749-1840) was an English landscape painter and printmaker. He is best known for his series of aquatints, "Oriental Scenery", which he created in collaboration with his nephew, William Daniell. The series depicted the architecture, landscapes and culture of India during the late 18th century, also a successful painter in oil, watercolour and pastel. His works were exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1784 to 1811 and he was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1795. He travelled extensively throughout Europe and Asia Minor, producing numerous sketches that later became paintings or prints. His work is highly regarded for its accuracy and attention to detail as well as its romanticised view of Indian life during this period.
