Pierre Antoine Demachy (1723-1789) was a French painter and engraver of the Rococo period. He was born in Paris, where he studied under Jean Restout. He became a member of the Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1745, and later joined the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1748. His works were highly praised by his contemporaries, including Denis Diderot who described him as “the most perfect painter”. Demachy's work is characterized by its delicate use of color, light, and texture to create vivid scenes that evoke emotion from viewers.
