George Cruikshank Collection

George Cruikshank (1792-1878) was a British artist and caricaturist who is best known for his illustrations of Charles Dickens' novels. He was born in London, the son of a Dutch engraver, and began working as an apprentice to his father at the age of 14. His early work included political cartoons for magazines such as Punch and The Times. He also illustrated books by authors such as William Thackeray, Thomas Hood, and John Leech. In 1836 he became the illustrator for Charles Dickens' works, including Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol. His illustrations were praised for their attention to detail and ability to capture character traits in each figure. Cruikshank's work had a lasting influence on later artists such as Aubrey Beardsley and Max Beerbohm. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1851 and continued to produce artwork until his death in 1878 at the age of 86.
