Samuel de Champlain Collection

Samuel de Champlain was a French explorer, navigator, cartographer and founder of New France. He is best known for his exploration of the Atlantic coast of North America and his role in establishing the first permanent European settlements in Canada. He explored much of what is now eastern Canada, as well as parts of the United States. He mapped out many rivers and lakes, including Lake Champlain which was named after him. In 1608 he founded Quebec City which became the capital city of New France. His explorations helped to open up trade between Europe and North America, leading to increased settlement in both regions. His legacy includes numerous monuments throughout Canada that commemorate his contributions to Canadian history.
