Rene Caillie Collection

Rene Caillie was a French explorer who is best known for being the first European to reach Timbuktu, an ancient city in Mali. He was born in 1799 and began his exploration career at the age of 20 when he joined a trading mission to Senegal. After spending several years in Africa, he decided to embark on an expedition to explore the Niger River and eventually reached Timbuktu in 1828. His journey was filled with danger and hardship, but he persevered and became the first European to set foot in this legendary city. After returning home, Caillie wrote a book about his experiences which helped bring attention to Africa's rich cultural heritage. He died at the age of 58 after living a life full of adventure and discovery.
