Augustus Wall Callcott Collection

Augustus Wall Callcott (1779-1844) was an English composer and organist. He was born in London and studied at the Royal Academy of Music under John Stafford Smith. He became a professor at the academy in 1808, and later held several other important positions there, including director of music from 1820 to 1843. Callcott wrote numerous works for the church, including anthems, psalm settings, hymn tunes and services. He also composed operas, chamber music and songs. His most famous work is his setting of "Rule Britannia" which was used for many years as a patriotic song in Britain. Callcott's influence on British music is still felt today; he helped to establish the Royal Academy of Music as a centre for musical excellence and education.
