Thomas Birch Collection

Thomas Birch (1779-1851) was an English painter and engraver. He was born in Warrington, Lancashire, and began his career as a portrait painter. In 1804 he moved to London where he became a successful marine painter. His works were exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1799 to 1851, and his paintings of naval battles are considered some of the finest British art from this period. He also produced many watercolour landscapes depicting rural scenes around England and Wales. His work is held in many public collections including the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London, The Victoria & Albert Museum in London, The Tate Britain Gallery in London and The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Thomas Birch's work is highly regarded for its accuracy and attention to detail which has earned him a place among the most important British artists of his time.
