John Chessell Buckler Collection

John Chessell Buckler (1811-1897) was an English artist and illustrator. He is best known for his watercolour paintings of rural scenes, particularly in the area around Oxfordshire. He also created illustrations for books, including works by William Wordsworth and Thomas Hardy. His work was highly praised by many, including John Ruskin who described him as “the most perfect landscape painter of the age”. Buckler was a founding member of the Society of Painters in Water Colours and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1837 onwards.
