Irving Berlin (1888-1989) was an American composer and lyricist, widely considered one of the greatest songwriters in history. He wrote hundreds of songs, many becoming major hits, which made him famous worldwide. His music forms a great part of the Great American Songbook. He wrote his first song at age 18 and went on to write Broadway shows and Hollywood films. His most popular songs include "White Christmas," "God Bless America," "Puttin' on the Ritz" and "There's No Business Like Show Business." Berlin was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1945 for his patriotic ballad “God Bless America” which he donated all proceeds to charity. He also received four Academy Awards for Best Original Song from eleven nominations, more than any other individual. Irving Berlin's influence on popular music is still felt today as his works continue to be performed by modern artists around the world.
