He was born in Paris, where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. In 1841, he exhibited at the Salon de Paris for the first time, and went on to exhibit regularly until 1887. His works were also shown in London, Brussels, Amsterdam and New York. Boutibonne's paintings are characterized by their vivid colors and detailed depictions of nature; they often feature figures set against a backdrop of lush foliage or rolling hillsides. He is also known for his lithographs depicting historical events such as Napoleon's coronation in 1804 or the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
