Elizabeth Blackwell Collection

Elizabeth Blackwell (1821-1910) was the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States. She was born in Bristol, England and immigrated to the United States with her family when she was 11 years old. After being denied admission to medical school due to her gender, she studied medicine privately and eventually graduated from Geneva Medical College in 1849. She opened her own practice in New York City and became a leader of the women's rights movement. Throughout her career, she wrote extensively on health care issues for women and children, founded several hospitals, and established a medical college for women. Her legacy continues today as an inspiration for aspiring female physicians around the world.
