Karl Benz Collection

Karl Benz was a German inventor and engineer who is best known for inventing the first practical automobile powered by an internal combustion engine. Born in 1844, Benz had an early interest in engineering and went on to study at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic Institute. He worked as a designer for several companies before founding his own workshop in Mannheim, Germany. In 1886, he patented his three-wheeled Motorwagen, which was the world's first true automobile. The car featured an internal combustion engine that ran on gasoline and had a four-stroke cycle design that is still used today. Over the next few years he continued to refine his design and eventually created a four-wheeled version of the car with improved steering capabilities. His inventions revolutionized transportation and helped pave the way for modern automobiles as we know them today.
